The first time I went to Hawaii was when I was 18 years old in 1974, and bought a Jim Richard 7’4″ with the lightning bolt, customary of that time, and just rode it like crazy for six months. The second time was three years later, and for a number of reasons, this time instead of a board, I headed to North Shore with a camera. The day I arrived was the final of the Masters and I just swam out and took some photos! This was the first North Shore event, and the winner was Rory Russell. As for cameramen of that time, there was Dan Markel, Art Brewer, Jeff Devine, Warren Bolster, Australian Peter Crawford, and the young Aaron Chang, Jeff Hornbaker, Japan’s Hiroshi Sato (Denjiro) and Surfing World’s Hatakeyama. Everyone was truly amazing. And after being completely absorbed in surfing photography for several years… I ended up heading for Mexico with Katsuhiro Murase…
